Legendary Japanese film “Tora-san” come back to home screens

Japan’s legendary icon Tora-san will come back to home screens. This time, its 38th episodes of the series titled “Tora-san Goes North (男はつらいよ 知床慕情)” will be aired on NTV at 8.45am on 11 March. The other two episodes “Tora-san’s Sunrise and Sunset” and “Tora-san’s Many Splendored Love” were broadcasted respectively in last November and February on the same channel.
Humanistic yet humorous, this film which will bring laughter and tears, features unsuccessful love and family drama of a peddler, Tora-san (starring Kiyoshi Atsumi) who often goes on trips and suddenly pops over to his home in downtown Tokyo. The life and sentiment of characters depicted in the film made it a long running hit since its first screening in 1969, spanning 48 episodes till 1995 and 1 special episode in 1997.
NTV in collaboration with the Japan Foundation air three selected films of “Tora-san” dubbed in Bengali language for the first time in Bangladesh to introduce various aspects of Japan as well as familiarise Bangladeshi viewers with the Japanese culture and faces.

Synopsis:
Tora-san meets an old veterinarian, Junkichi Ueno (Toshiro Mifune) in Shiretoko, Hokkaido. Junkichi is uncouth but he has a heart of gold and his new-found friend, Tora-san, ends up staying with the crusty vet. Junkichi lives alone and Etsuko (Keiko Awaji) a bar proprietress takes care of him. One day, Junkichi’s only daughter, newly-divorced Rinko (Keiko Takeshita) leaves Tokyo and heads back home. The townspeople warmly welcome her back but the socially clumsy Junkichi is unable to communicate with her until Tora-san intervenes.
World-famous actor Toshiro Mifune co-stars with Atsumi in this episode. Keiko Takeshita makes her second appearance in the series after debuting in the 32nd Tora-san film. Keiko Awaji’s portrayal of the heart-of-gold bar-mama marks the veteran actress’ return to film after a long hiatus. She made her film debut in Akira Kurosawa’s “Stray Dog” (1949) where her casting with Kurosawa’s favorite actor, Toshiro Mifune was much-hyped in the press.
