    Dhaka, July 23, 2026 - On July 19-20, 2026, Mr. TAKAHASHI Naoki, Minister of the Embassy of Japan to Bangladesh, visited Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.
 
    On July 19, Minister TAKAHASHI visited Rohingya Camp 24 in Teknaf and attended the inauguration ceremony of “The Project for the Improvement of the Facility and Medical Equipment at the Primary Healthcare Center” provided to NGO “MedGlobal” by the Government of Japan through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP). Camp-in-Charge, Upazila Health & Family Planning Officer, MedGlobal Executive Director, and MedGlobal Country Representative were also present at the ceremony.
 
    The project by MedGlobal is expected to enable approximately 40,000 community people, including approximately 17,000 patients annually, to access essential healthcare services through the provision of essential medical equipment and the improvement of facilities and infrastructure in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
 
    “I commend MedGlobal for the dedication and professionalism that have brought us to today’s inauguration.” “By making effective use of the Embassy’s support, and by ensuring sound operation and maintenance, I trust that MedGlobal will take full ownership so that people in the camps and neighboring host communities continue to benefit from this project for years to come.”, stated Minister TAKAHASHI.
 
    Japan has supported 225 NGO projects through GGP since 1989, with the view to enhancing economic and social human security in the grass-roots levels. The total sum of these GGP grants extended to approximately USD 18 million.
 
    Against the backdrop of the recent heavy monsoon rainfall in Cox’s Bazar, Minister TAKAHASHI extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and expressed his sympathy to all those affected. He stated “Japan remains committed to strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities in and around the camps.”
 
    On July 20, Minister TAKAHASHI visited a registration centre (UNHCR), a food distribution centre (WFP), a Women-Led Market (UN Women), a shelter site (IOM) in the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya. He also observed a primary health care centre supported by Japan's GGP (Friendship), as well as a learning centre operated by Save the Children, which is supported by the Government of Japan through the Japan Platform (JPF).
 
    Since the large influx of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh in August 2017, Japan has contributed over 242 million USD to various interventions in Cox's Bazar through international organizations and NGOs, providing assistance such as food, healthcare, WASH, shelters, protection, and gender mainstreaming.
 
    Almost nine years have already passed since the onset of the Rohingya refugee crisis in August 2017. It is essential to keep raising awareness of the international community. Japan commends Bangladesh’s continued generosity in hosting around 1.2 million Rohingya and will continue to work toward the resolution of the Rohingya humanitarian crisis.
