Ambassador ITO’s Visit to St. Martin’s Island

On 8th Nov 2021, Japanese Ambassador ITO Naoki visited St. Martin’s Island, a beautiful southernmost island of Bangladesh. This trip was initiated by H.E. Earl Miller, U.S. Ambassador, to heighten awareness of environment protection. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh, cooperated in its arrangement.

Ambassador ITO listened to the voice of an affected resident carefully who has suffered from drinking water salinization in a well last two years. He also observed other severe problems like sea-level rise, high tide, coral bleaching, and coastal erosion. Ambassador ITO discussed those issues with a local expert, focusing on the importance of restoring coastal vegetation and dunes.

Ambassador ITO traveled together with Ambassadors of Australia, the EU, and the U.S.

Acting Foreign Secretary Rear Admiral (Retd.) Md. Khurshed Alam joined the trip and briefed the situations of the island.
