                      [Recent Events on Japan-Bangladesh Relations] 
                      
                      * Ambassador’s Visit to Chittagong Hill Tracts (Feb 24-26) 
                      
                      Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Masayuki Inoue, visited 
                      Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) from February 24 to 26. The 
                      main purpose of his visit was to inaugurate two Multi 
                      Purpose Community Centres funded by Japan through UNDP. 
                      Japan provided UNDP a grant to build ten community centres 
                      in CHT to promote human security in the area. 
                      
                      * Japan’s Contribution to the Visually Disabled People 
                      (Feb 20, Dhaka) 
                      
                      On February 20, the Government of Japan and Blind 
                      Education and Rehabilitation Development Organization (BERDO) 
                      signed a Grant Contract amounting to US$88,996 
                      (approximately Tk60 lac) on the reconstruction of a 
                      talking library for the visually disabled people in Dhaka. 
                      BERDO will install a recording studio at Mirpur and 
                      purchase some equipment to produce educational software. 
                      
                      Japan has granted US$8.8 million (approximately Tk61.9 
                      crore) contributions to 105 NGOs’ 126 projects. It has 
                      been a significant support of the NGOs’ efforts to promote 
                      social development at the grassroots level in Bangladesh.   
                      
                      * Bangla Speech and Bangla Solo Music Competition (Feb 19, 
                      Dhaka) 
                      
                      The Japanese Universities Alumni Association in Bangladesh 
                      (JUAAB) organized Bangla Speech and Bangla Solo Music 
                      Competition on February 19 at Dhaka University TSC 
                      Auditorium, celebrating the International Mother Language 
                      Day. Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Prof. Dr. SMA 
                      Faiz, Ambassador Inoue and other guests were present. 
                      
                      Foreign nationals showed their competency in the Bangla 
                      language while Bangladeshis in the Japanese language. A 
                      cultural function followed the competition. 
                      
                        
                      
                      * Japan’s Support in Fight against Avian Influenza (Feb 
                      17, Dhaka) 
                      
                      On February 17, the inaugural ceremony of the Advocacy 
                      Meeting on Asian and Human Pandemic Influenza was held at 
                      the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Adviser for the 
                      Ministry, Major General (Retd) Dr. ASM Matiur Rahman 
                      launched a country-wide training program that will 
                      eventually reach 28 million people. Ambassador Inoue, 
                      Representative for UNICEF, Mr. Louis-Georges Arsenault, 
                      Representative for WHO, Dr. Duangbedhi Shanehabal, and 
                      other guests were present. 
                      
                      The Government of Japan funded the project at a cost of 
                      US$688,547. The government of Japan decided last year to 
                      provide US$1.8 million to Bangladesh through UNICEF to 
                      tackle the Avian and Human Pandemic Influenza especially 
                      in risk communication and preventive activities.  In 
                      addition, Japan provided in total US$47 million to other 
                      nine developing countries in Asia and Africa, through 
                      UNICEF simultaneously.
