Japan’s
Food Aid trough WFP to Bangladesh (Dec 6, Dhaka)
The Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Masayuki Inoue, handed
over 8,000 tons of rice and 100 tons of canned fish, worth
US$4.3 million (Tk30 crore) to Secretary of the Ministry
of Food and Disaster Management, Mr. Md. Abdul Haque.
Representative of World Food Program (WFP) in Bangladesh,
Mr. Douglas Broderick, was also present at the hand-over
ceremony.
This assistance, through WFP, will assist 250,000 poor
people. The rice will be distributed to 40,000 ultra-poor
households and the canned tuna fish arrived in August and
has been provided to 50,000 households in the last three
months.
Japan has been one of WFP’s top donors and in 2005 alone
donated US $161 million worldwide. In Bangladesh, Japan is
the third largest donor in 2006.

Japan’s
Support to School Building Extension (Dec 5, Gazipur)
The International Angel Association (IAA) inaugurated
Yukiko Angel School, the extension of
IAA
School Building at Conabari, Gazipu, on December 5. The
Government of Japan, upon the request of IAA, provided
fund of US$86,907 (Tk60 lac) under the Japanese Grant Aid
for the Grass Roots and Human Development Projects.
In his congratulatory message, Ambassador Inoue emphasized
the importance of cooperation among the Government of
Bangladesh, local NGOs, and foreign NGOs such as
IAA-Japan.
* Workshop on Agricultural Technology Transfer Project
(Dec 2, Dhaka)
A review workshop “Agricultural Technology Transfer
Project” was organized by the Bangladesh Agricultural
Research Council (BARC) on December 2. Executive Chairman
of BARC, Dr. M. Nurul Alam, Counsellor of Japan, Mr.
Masami Tamura, and other distinguished guests were
present.
Technical sessions in the fields of livestock, forestry,
and fisheries were held, in which active exchanges among
participants.
Counsellor Tamura stressed the vital importance to build
effective linkages between agriculture and rural
development in order to curb poverty in Bangladesh. He
introduced that the Japan’s Country Assistance Program for
Bangladesh places agriculture and rural development as one
of the top priority sectors.

Japan’s
Support to NGO for Power Supply Stabilization (Nov 30,
Dhaka)
On November 30, a signing ceremony on a Grant Contract
worth of US$270,000 (Tk1.9 crore) was held at the Embassy
of Japan. Ambassador Inoue, Managing Director of Kumudini
Welfare Trust of Bengal Ltd., Mr. Rajiv Prasad Shaha, and
others were present.
The purpose of this agreement is to ensure uninterrupted
power supply to the Kumudini Welfare Trust facilities. AS
part of the agreement, the Kumudini receives a grant for
900 KVA gas generators. With stable power supply,
efficient health care services and school education for
community people will be possible.
Kumudini Welfare Trust’s main activities are to provide
medical care at low cost and to provide education to
girls. It runs a general hospital with 750 beds, school,
hostel, and nursing school for girls, and medical college
in Tangail district.
Since the inception Japanese Grant Assistance program in
1989, a total number of 124 projects covering 103
Bangladesh NGOs have received grant amounting to US$8.6
million (Tk60 crore) from the Government of Japan.

* Foreign Minister Aso’s Policy Speech (Nov 30, Tokyo)
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, H.E. Mr. Taro Aso,
made a policy speech at the Japan Institute of
International Affairs Seminar on November 30.
