[Recent Event on Japan-Bangladesh Relations]
* Deputy Foreign Minister’s Visit to Dhaka (Nov 11-12,
Dhaka)
Deputy Foreign Minister of Japan, Mr. Mitoji Yabunaka,
visited
Dhaka
from November 11 to 12. He held a meeting with Foreign
Secretary of Bangladesh, Mr. Hemayetuddin. They reaffirmed
the amicable relationship between the two countries, which
was further strengthened by the visit of Foreign Minister
of Japan, H.E. Mr. Taro Aso, to Dhaka in July, and
exchanged views on bilateral, regional, and global issues.
* JDS Returnees’ Report Session (Nov 6, Dhaka)
On November 6, the report session of Japan Development
Scholarship (JDS) returnees was held at the Economic
Relations Division (ERD). With 21 new returnees, the
number of returnees adds up to 73 so far, and 34 are
currently studying in Japan.
JDS was established by the Government of Japan in 2001. It
is designed to provide young Bangladeshis with
opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills. They
are expected to play leading roles for the development of
Bangladesh and to strengthen friendly and cooperative
relations between Japan and Bangladesh after completion of
their studies in Japan. The fields of study include public
administration, economics, medical administration and
environmental policy.

* Seminar on Agricultural Products Exports (Nov 6, Dhaka)
Seminar on “Promotion of the Production and Export of
Bangladeshi Agricultural Products” was held on November 6,
jointly organized by Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO)
and Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), and supported by Dhaka
Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI). Ambassador of
Japan, H.E. Mr. Masayuki Inoue, Vice President of EPB, Mr.
Mir Shahabuddin Mohammad, President of DCCI, Mr. MA Momen,
and other guests were present.
Key-note papers were presented by Dr. Sanae Ito, Associate
Professor from Graduate School of International
Development of Nagoya University, and Mr. Shunsuke Satomi,
Executive Board Member from Shapla Neer, a Japanese NPO.
* Vaccination Handing-over Ceremony (Nov 2, Dhaka)
On November 2, the Vaccine Handing-over Ceremony for
Neonatal Tetanus Elimination Campaign was held at the
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Secretary of the
Ministry, Mr. AKM Zafar Ullah Khan, Counsellor-Deputy
Chief of the Mission of Japan, Mr. Yonezo Fukuda, Deputy
Country Director of UNICEF, Ms. Rosella Morelli, and
others were present.
The number of neonatal death caused by tetanus
significantly decreased from 41 out of 1000 in 1986 to 2.3
in 2000. This huge success was brought by the Ministry of
Health and Family Welfare, promoting five-time
immunizations among pregnant-possible women.
In order to assist Bangladesh’s efforts, Japan has made
significant contributions to immunization programs in
Bangladesh. The total amount of Japanese aid used for
Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) through UNICEF from
1996 to 2004 was around US$45 million, including
approximately US$2 million specifically for tetanus and
measles in the last two years.
In addition, a good number of Japan Overseas Cooperation
Volunteers have been providing technical assistance in
immunization activities since 1999. They are monitoring
the situation at the grassroots level across Bangladesh
and generating public awareness on the knowledge of
disease and how to prevent them among the rural masses.
* Prof. Yunus’s Visit to Japan (Oct 25-29)
Prof. Muhammad Yunus visited Japan from October 25 to 29
in order to attend events organized by the United Nations
Foundation as he sits on as a member of the Board of
Directors.
On October 27, Prof. Yunus, along with other 6 members of
the Board, visited Foreign Minister of Japan, H.E. Mr.
Taro Aso, and expressed his appreciation of
Japan’s
roles in the UN. On the following day, he visited the
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima city.
