Brief history on bilateral relations between
Japan and People's Republic of Bangladesh
1972 (Feb.10) [*] Japan recognized the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
(Feb.11) [*] Japan and the People's Republic of Bangladesh established the diplomatic relations.
[*] Embassy of Bangladesh in Tokyo was opened.
[*] Japanese Parliamentarians Delegation headed by Mr. Takashi Hayakawa visited Bangladesh.
[*] Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh was opened with Ambassador Takashi Oyamada.
[*] Bangladesh-Japan Association was established.
[*] Japanese relief assistance of rice, clothes and vessels were provided to Bangladesh.
(the first Japanese assistance to the People's Republic of Bangladesh)
1973 [*] Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman visited Japan.
[*] Exchange of Notes Concerning the Dispatch of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers was signed.
[*] The first batch of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers was dispatched.
1974 [*] Japanese Economic Mission led by Mr. Shigeo Nagano, visited Bangladesh.
1975

[*] Their Imperial Highnesses the Crown Prince AKIHITO and the Crown Princess MICHIKO (currently Their Majesties The Emperor and The Empress) visited Bangladesh

1977 [*] Foreign Minister Hatoyama visited Bangladesh.
1978 [*] President Ziaur Rahman visited Japan.
[*] Agreement for the Exchange of International Money Orders was signed.
1980 [*] Agreement between Japan and Bangladesh for Air Services was signed.
[*] The first Japan-Bangladesh Committee for Commerce and Economic Cooperation was held in Dhaka.
[*] President Ziaur Rahman visited Japan.
1981 [*] Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel, Constructed with Japanese loan, was opened.
[*] Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentarians League was established.
1982 [*] Cultural Agreement between Japan and Bangladesh was signed.
1985 [*] President Ershad visited Japan.
1987 [*] Foreign Minister Kuranari visited Bangladesh.
1989 [*] President Ershad visited Japan.
[*] Former Prime Minister Fukuda visited Bangladesh.
1990 [*] Prime Minister Kaifu visited Bangladesh.
[*] Meghna Bridge, constructed with Japanese grant, was opened.
[*] President Ershad visited Japan.
1991

[*] TV drama series OSHIN broadcasted in Bangladesh (till 1992).
[*] Japanese Election Ovserbation Team led by Mr. Hiroshi Mitsuzuka, President of Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentarians' League, visited Bangladesh.
[*] Convention between Japan and Bangladesh for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes Income was signed.
[*] Economic Mission led by Mr. Kikuo Ikeda, dispatched by the Government of Japan, visited Bangladesh.

1994

[*] Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia visited Japan.
[*] Mr. Hiroshi Mitsuzuka, President of the Japan Bangladesh Parliamentarians League.
[*] Mission of the Federation of Economic Organizations of Japan visited Bangladesh.
[*] Meghna-Gumti Bridge, constructed with Japanese grant, was opened.

1995 [*] Foreign Minister Mustafizur Rahman visited Japan.
1996

[*] Japanese Election Observation Team led by Mr. Shin Sakurai, Vice-President of Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentarians League, visited Bangladesh.

1997 [*] Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited Japan.
[*] Finance Minister Mr. S.A.M.S Kibria visited Japan.
1998

[*] Jamuna Bridge, Constructed with Japanese loan, was opened.
[*] Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad visited Japan.
[*] Agreement between Japan and Bangladesh concerning the Promotion and Protection of Investment was signed.
[*] Mr. Shin Sakurai, Vice President of the Japan Bangladesh Parliamentarians league, visited Bangladesh.

2000

[*] Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad visited Japan.
[*] Prime Minister Mori visited Bangladesh.
[*] Mr. Shin Sakurai, Vice President of the Japan Bangladesh Parliamentarians league, visited Bangladesh.

2001

[*] Chittagong International Airport, constructed with Japanese loan, was opened.
[*] Japanese Election Observation Team led by Mr. Shin Sakurai, Vice-President of Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentarians League, visited Bangladesh.
[*] Information Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan visited Japan.
[*] Women and Children Affairs Minister Begum Khurshid Zahan Haque visited Japan.

2002

[*] Foreign Minister Monzur Morshed Khan visited Japan.
[*] Mr. Shin Sakurai, Special Envoy of Japanese Prime Minister, Vice-President of Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentarians League, visited Bangladesh.
[*] Agreement on Technical Cooperation was signed.

2003

[*] Foreign Minister Mr. M. Morshed Khan visited Japan.
[*] Social Welfare Minister Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed visited Japan.
[*] Water Resource Minister Mr. L.K Siddqui visited Japan.
[*] Fisheries and Live Stock Minister Mr. Sadek Hossain Khoka visited Japan.

2006

[*] Foreign Minister Mr. Taro Aso visited Bangladesh.

[*] Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus visited Japan.
