Japan Supports Medical Waste Management in Dhaka City

 On 14TH February 2013, the inaugural ceremony for Installation of Equipment for Medical Waste Management in Dhaka City was held in Pan Pacific Sonargaon hotel. This project was implemented by local NGO PRISM Bangladesh with the support of the Government of Japan through Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP). Mr. Hiroyuki Minami, Minister, Embassy of Japan attended the ceremony on behalf of the Government of Japan to commemorate the inauguration of the project and hoped that this project would greatly contribute towards the betterment of collection, treatment and safe disposal of hazardous waste in Dhaka City. Mr. Abu Alam Md. Shahid Khan, Secretary of Ministry of LGRD also attended the ceremony.

 In 2012, PRISM Bangladesh received 102,385 US dollars, or approximately 82 lac Bangladesh Taka from the grant for the second time from the Government of Japan, through which PRISM has procured 3 ton and 1.5 ton covered vehicle for hazardous waste transportation, autoclave and stainless steel(SS) tray for autoclave. As a result collection of hazardous waste will increase from 320 hospitals to 640 hospitals and treatment of hazardous waste will increase from 7 ton/day to 11 ton/day in 3 years. PRISM will arrange awareness raising programs for staff of hospital to increase their knowledge and skill on hazardous waste management.

 The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) began its operation in 1989 and has been contributing to social development at the grassroots level. In Bangladesh, a total number of 173 projects have received the grant amounting to US$ 13,057,235 (Approximately Taka 107 Crore).
