Japan Provided 30 Mobile Desalination Equipment

21 September 2015

On September 20, 2015, H.E. Masato Watanabe, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, and H.E. Mr. Moffazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Honorable Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, attended the handing-over ceremony of mobile desalination equipment which was held in Dhaka. The Government of Japan provided JPY 1.5 billion (approximately BDT 970 million) as a grant to install mobile desalination equipment.

Through this Japan’s Grant Aid, 30 mobile desalination equipments have been deployed in coastal area of Khulna and Barisal Division and will be used for supplying safe drinking water to the sufferers for disaster damage relief. In coastal area, the ground-water and surface-water which are used for drinking have been contaminated by salt and becoming undrinkable. Especially when cyclone storm hits the area, saline contamination becomes serious because inland is inundated with sea water. Thus, there is a high risk of shortage of drinking water whenever natural disaster occurs. These mobile desalination equipments will be deployed to disaster-stricken areas expeditiously by trucks to supply purified drinking water from river water. When 30 equipments are under full operation, 160,000 people can get 3 liters of safe water each per day. It is expected to prevent the secondary damages such as dehydration and infectious disease.

Japan is a disaster-prone country like Bangladesh. A normal disaster may harm the development efforts in a country and can jeopardize economic growth of a risk country. Therefore, Japan believes that the disaster management is one of the most important obligations for the government of each country. The Government of Japan has been supporting the improvement of disaster management capacity of the Government of Bangladesh for 30 years.
