Japan Supports Agricultural Mechanization in Rural Areas of Bangladesh

Dhaka: 19 December 2012
Press Release

The Government of Japan decided to extend two grant assistance totaling US$ 226,186 (approximately Tk 1 crore 81 Lac taka) for agricultural development projects in rural areas of Bangladesh through Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP). The grant contracts have been signed between H.E. Mr. Shiro Sadoshima, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, and representatives of two recipients at the Embassy of Japan today.

The two projects will establish unique models of agricultural development. They will procure agricultural machineries and provide comparatively cheaper-rate renting service to poor farmers. The rent collected will be used to meet the operational cost of these projects, including depreciation to enable the organisations to replace the machineries upon reaching end-of-life. This self-sustaining model will ensure that the projects will have lasting impact on the farmers as well as on the socio-economic development of rural areas.

Agriculture Sustainable & Socio–Economic Development Organization - ASSEDO was established in 2001. Their activities include: providing support to rural households in the areas of water, sanitation and health through community based organizations; transfering improved and appropriate technology for livestock and poultry; supporting homestead gardening. Under Embassy of Japan's GGHSP scheme, this organization has received US$ 123,338 to install agricultural machinery for poor and landless farmers in Nachole and Tanore upazilla. With modern technologies and equipment it is anticipated that productivity will improve, that production cost will decrease, and that cropping pattern and intensity will increase, leading to the increase in farmer households' income. It is expected that around 1800 farmer’s household will benefit from this project.

Voluntary organization for social development (VOSD) was established in 1987 to improve the lives of the rural and urban poor and vulnerable people through providing services to raise awareness, to empower and to improve socio-economic conditions in the areas of health, agriculture, livestock, etc. VOSD has received US$ 102,848 today to also install agricultural machinery for poor and landless farmers in Uzirpur Upazilla. This project will provide modern agricultural facilities to the poor and landless farmers, train them to use them, ensure timely water supply, land tilling, weeding, threshing, chemical spraying for increased crop production and productivity. It will help establish self-reliant and self-sufficient farmers in the area. It is expected that 1200 farmers household in Uzirpur Upazilla will directly benefit from this project.

The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) began its operations in 1989 and its primary objective is to support various development projects which enhance human security at the grass-roots level. To date, in Bangladesh, a total number of 173 projects have received the grant amounting to US$ 13,057,235(Approximately Taka 107 Crore).
