On March 19, 2013, H.E. Mr. Shiro
Sadoshima, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh and Mr. Md. Shafiqur
Rahman Patwari, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forest of the
People’s Republic of Bangladesh signed the bilateral document on Low
Carbon Growth Partnership between Japanese side and Bangladeshi side in
the presence of H.E. Dr. Hasan Mahmud, Hon’ble Minister for Environment
and Forest.
This document will provide for establishing a
Bilateral Offset Credit Mechanism (BOCM), which is designed to address
the global challenge of climate change by collective efforts of Japan
and Bangladesh. Through this mechanism, Bangladesh will be able to
reduce the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) by utilizing Japan’s
environment-friendly technologies, products, systems, services as well
as infrastructure while Japan will be able to use thus achieved GHG
emission reductions or removals to meet its internationally pledged GHG
mitigation efforts.
Through implementing the BOCM, Japan wishes to
work closely and take a joint initiative with Bangladesh to preserve
the beautiful nature of the Golden Bengal, and to make further
contribution to the international endeavor of preventing climate
change.
