Ambassador attended founding stone ceremony for Improvement of Public Food Storage Capacity in Santahar

 On January 24, 2013, H.E. Mr. Shiro Sadoshima, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, Dr. Muhammad Abdur Razzaque, MP; Minister for Food attended the founding stone ceremony for Improvement of the Capacity of Public Food Storage. The Government of Japan provided two billion one hundred fifty-six million Japanese Yen (approximately $24.5m) as a grant to Bangladesh to build a public food storage and procure equipments. The project period will be one year and 9 months and the project will be completed by October 2014. Dr. Takao Toda, Chief Representative of JICA, Ms. Mushfeka Ikfat, Secretary in charge, Ministry of Food; Mr. Abdul Momen Talukder, MP; Dr, Akram Hossain Chowdhury MP; Mr. Mohammad Abdul Jalil, MP; Mr. Emajuddin Pramanik, MP also attended the ceremony.

 The preparatory work has already started last October and the speed of the construction is expected to increase after this ceremony. The construction will be undertaken by skilled Japanese construction company, Shimizu Corporation, and Japanese consultation company, Kokusai Kogyo Co., Ltd. will manage the schedule and monitor the construction.

 Shimizu Corporation, founded in 1804, has provided architectural, engineering, construction, and development services for commercial, industrial, infrastructure, and residential projects in more than 40 countries. Shimizu has undertaken various projects in Bangladesh, including Chittagong Airport and Rupsa Bridge.

 Kokusai Kogyo Co., Ltd., founded in 1947, has a long experience in this field of consultancy. They have successfully completed 550 projects all over the world including 4 projects in Bangladesh, such as the project for strengthening of water examination system.

 The Public food storage will have a capacity of 25,740 Mt (Approximately) food storage facility. By improving the capacity of Public Food Storage, it is expected to contribute to the use of arable lands; to ensure longer and safe storage averting risks; to increase efficiency of food management through reducing storage and handling losses; to use multistoried warehouse predominantly for storing national buffer stock by taking food security into account; to maintain high unloading and dispatching capacity in case of emergency; to maintain high quality of grain and cost effectiveness in maintenance and operation.

 During the founding stone ceremony, H.E Mr. Shiro Sadoshima expressed his heartiest congratulations to the Government of Bangladesh and hoped this project would be implemented smoothly and effectively. He also hoped that the people of Bangladesh would get maximum benefits from the project while ensuring food security.
