Japan Supports Construction of Rural Hospital in Netrokona
Dhaka: 24 March 2014 Press Release

The Government of Japan has decided to donate US $ 95,194 to Poverty Eradication Program (PEP) to construct a Rural Hospital in Hajigonj Bazar, Barhatta, Netrokona. The grant contract for this Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) was signed today at the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka by H.E. Mr. Shiro Sadoshima, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, and Mr. S. M. Mujibur Rahman, Executive Director of PEP.
PEP, A national NGO, will construct a two-storied hospital on locally donated land. It will be equipped with outdoor facility, 6 bedded cabin, doctor and staff rooms, medicine dispensary and pathological laboratory. The project aims to serve the people of the area who have long been deprived of economically and physically accessible medical care. In 3 years, the hospital will be financed solely by fees collected from patients.
The Executive Director of PEP said in the ceremony, “We are hopeful for a positive change in the morbidity and mortality in the area as people avail the facilities for safer delivery and general medicine”.
“Reduction of child mortality and improved maternal health continue to be major challenges for Bangladesh”, commented the Ambassador of Japan. He added, “As this hospital will place emphasis on healthcare for the poor by adopting a dual-fee system, we hope to see more impact on the needier and less fortunate population – we are very pleased to be able to contribute for such cause”.
Through GGHSP, the Government of Japan has been providing support to improve human security at the grass-roots level in Bangladesh since 1989. To this date, a total of 183 projects have been funded through this scheme, amounting to US $ 14,229,227.
