25 Bangladeshi Officials will receive Higher Education at Japanese Universities

Dhaka: 31 May 2015
Press Release

The signing ceremony of “Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS)” was held at Economic Relations Division (ERD) of Ministry of Finance on May 31, 2015. Mr. Takeshi Matsunaga, Chargé d' Affaires ad interim, the Embassy of Japan and Mr. Mohammad Mejbahuddin, Senior Secretary of ERD signed the Exchange of Notes representing respective governments. Mr. Mikio Hataeda, Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh Office, also attended the ceremony and signed the Grant Agreement for the project.

Since 2002, Japan has been providing academic opportunities for Bangladeshi Government officials and Bangladesh Bank officials to study in various fields such as public administration, economic planning, legal capacity, urban/rural planning, and public finance and investment policy at 7 different Japanese universities. 243 Bangladeshi officials were sent to Japan and 211 fellows have returned successfully.

In May 2014, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Japan and requested to increase the number of JDS fellows from Bangladesh. The Japanese Government decided to increase the number of JDS fellows from 15 to 25 responding to the request. It is expected that JDS fellows, with increased quota, would continue to play a significant and growing role after their return to Bangladesh by applying what they have learnt in Japan to the public administration in Bangladesh, in a manner that best suits Bangladesh, and to offer practical solutions to issues on socio-economic development.

Amount of Grant Assistance: Up to 315 million Japanese Yen
